Best time to visit the Zagora desert, and what to pack
The desert is beautiful all year, but January and July are two different worlds. Here is when to go and what to bring.
The desert changes a lot with the seasons. The right time depends on what you want to do: a night at camp, a camel ride, or a trek of several days.
Best season: October to April
From October to April, days are mild and sunny. This is the best period for the desert of Zagora and M'Hamid, especially for treks.
- October and November: warm days, pleasant nights. A very good time.
- December to February: mild days but cold nights, sometimes close to 0 °C. The sky is often very clear.
- March and April: pleasant spring. Some days the wind lifts the sand.

What about summer?
From June to September it is very hot, often over 40 °C in the afternoon. You can still come: we go out at sunrise or late afternoon and rest in the shade during the hot hours. The night in the desert stays pleasant. I do not recommend long treks in midsummer.
What to pack
- A desert scarf or a hat against sun and wind. We can lend you one.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, even in winter.
- Warm clothes for the night: fleece, beanie, socks (October to April).
- Closed shoes or sturdy sandals.
- A small head torch.
- A water bottle, wet wipes and a power bank.
- A small bag for the night: big luggage can stay at the starting point.

Worth knowing
M'Hamid El Ghizlane hosts festivals celebrating nomad culture and desert music every year. Dates change from year to year: check them before booking, or ask me on WhatsApp.
